The Right Honourable Sir John Gillen is a retired Lord Justice of Appeal. He was appointed by the Lord Chief Justice to lead the Review of Civil and Family Justice in September 2015. The findings of the review were published in 2017, and included recommendations relating to the overhaul of the courts system to include specialist domestic violence courts in Northern Ireland.

Educated at Methodist College and Queen’s College, Oxford, Sir John was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1970 and took Silk in 1983.  He was appointed a High Court Judge in January 1999.  In January 2001 he was assigned as the Family Judge and held this position and that of Chairman of the Children Order Advisory Committee until December 2006.  In September 2008 he was assigned as the Senior Judge of the Queen’s Bench Division.  He was appointed to the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law.

Speaking about his involvement in the conference, Sir John told us:
“This post-Weinstein moment shows how cultural change can happen if we all  stand up and speak out. I am convinced that conferences such as this, where we stand up and speak out on behalf of children in domestic violence settings, can provide them also with a long overdue #MeToo moment and trigger fundamental change.”
